Purpose

  • Engage in learning the interdisciplinary nature of food science and technology
  • Promote inclusivity of all members in the discipline of food science and technology
  • Trainees receive feedback from professional community to improve as a scientist and presenter

Presentation Types

In-Person Presentation Types

  • Poster Presentation – prepare and present a visual poster along with a 3-minute oral research overview. Examples include research ideas, review of a topic, proposals, and research results. Poster boards are 46” (width) by 72” (height). Standard poster are generally 48” by 36”. Landscape and portrait orientations are allowed.
  • Short Conference Oral Presentation – prepare and present a 15-minute oral presentation with PowerPoint or equivalent presentation software. The presentation will include 12 minutes for the oral presentation, followed by 3 minutes of Q&A. Examples include research ideas, review of a topic, proposals, and research results.
  • Workshop – prepare a 15-minute oral presentation to teach participants. The workshop must include a 20-minute demonstration or hands-on activity. Target audiences may include the scientific community, industry or general public (all ages).
  • Lightning or Flash Talk (3in5) – prepare and present 3 slides with a 5-minute oral presentation with no Q&A period.


In-Person or Recorded Presentation Types

  • Video – prepare a 5-minute video to explain a food science and technology concept. Target audiences may include the scientific community, industry or general public (all ages).
  • “TED-Tech” Talk – prepare and present a 10-minute TED Talk style presentation describing a concept in food science and technology to non-scientists. Presentations will be accompanied by a descriptive visual (e.g., a PowerPoint slide, a figure or diagram) that helps them present this concept.
  • Entrepreneurial Elevator Pitch – prepare a 10-minute elevator pitch about a new or improved food product or engineering process. Presentations will be accompanied by a descriptive visual (e.g., a PowerPoint slide, a figure or diagram) that helps them present this concept.
